SSE Pacifico (SSEP), in partnership with the British Embassy Tokyo through the MUSUBI Initiative and the University of Edinburgh, has successfully delivered an Offshore Wind Scholarship Programme for students from the National Institute of Technology (KOSEN) and high schools across Japan.

In August 2026, twelve students from across Japan travelled to Scotland to experience one of the world's leading renewable energy regions. Through study opportunities at the University of Edinburgh and visits to renewable energy facilities developed and operated by SSE, students gained first-hand insight into the offshore wind industry and the wider renewable energy sector.

The programme was designed to support the next generation of leaders in renewable energy, including offshore wind, while helping to develop professionals who can contribute to the sustainable growth of local communities and regional economies. By providing STEM students with practical learning experiences in Scotland, the programme aimed to broaden their understanding of the industry, its opportunities and its future potential.

Alongside intensive English language classes at the University of Edinburgh, students visited SSE's Glasgow office, the Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm Operations and Maintenance Base in Montrose, and the Pitlochry Hydroelectric Dam. These visits gave students a valuable opportunity to see first-hand how renewable energy projects are planned, built, operated and maintained.

Throughout the programme, students expanded their technical knowledge of offshore wind energy, strengthened their English communication skills and gained a deeper understanding of different cultures. As part of the programme, students researched and presented posters in English, using their learning and experiences to develop ideas and recommendations for addressing future opportunities and challenges within Japan's offshore wind industry.

Following their return to Japan, students took part in a reporting session at the British Embassy Tokyo, where they shared how the knowledge and insights gained in Scotland could support both the development of their local communities and the growth of Japan's offshore wind industry. The session encouraged students to reflect on how their learning could help address challenges facing their regions and support their future career ambitions.

The programme also highlighted the importance of collaboration between offshore wind developments and local communities, as well as the need for people with diverse skills and backgrounds to work together to support the industry's long-term success.

SSEP remains committed to supporting young people as they pursue their ambitions and realise their potential. By helping to develop and retain talent within local communities and supporting regional economic growth, SSEP aims to play a positive role in building the foundations of a sustainable offshore wind industry in Japan.
